Floating Wetlands are widely gaining acceptance as a Best Management Practice (BMP), for reducing nutrients such as Nitrogen, Phosphorus and other pollutants such as Total Suspended Solids (TSS) including the small colloidal particles that provide transport for pathogens (ecoli) and heavy metals.

Using Floating Wetlands as a retrofit for existing stormwater wet ponds can help meet Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) targets. Our solutions are easily installed in the existing pond and they float, so they don’t require expensive pond modifications or additional land. After conducting their own tests and research since 2013, the Chesapeake Stormwater Network and Chesapeake Research Consortium recommend Floating Treatment Wetlands as a BMP with nutrient reduction credits to help municipalities in the Bay Area states achieve their TMDL targets.

Using Floating Wetland Solutions during the upfront design of a wet pond can result in a pond that performs better while requiring a smaller land foot print so more land can be used for its primary purpose.

Home Owner Associations and public lands with ponds or other water bodies can use Floating Wetland Solutions to reduce pollutants while at the same time provide an aesthetically pleasing waterscape and or providing nature with much needed habitat.

As water concentrations become more concentrated as in rural waste water or animal effluent treatment lagoons, Floating Wetland Solutions efficacy increases and can often provide the incremental difference for treatment facilities to remain in compliance with National Pollutant Discharge Elimination Systems (NPDES) permits or other discharge targets.

Floating Wetland Solutions don't include chemical treatments and mechanical solutions are limited to aeration and circulation.

Too often years of erosion and sediment accumulation have been ignored such that the eventual need for and expense associated with dredging have a staggering price tag. Nutrients accumulate in the sediments such that when disturbed by storm events or eventually by dredging itself, they can wash downstream with catastrophic effect to the eco system. For example the Susquehanna River is the single largest contributor of nutrients into the Chesapeake Bay and the eco system decline in the Bay can be directly linked to scouring events releasing massive amounts of nutrients through the dams resulting from major storms.

Biological Dredging

Floating Wetlands Solutions' BioDi Aerobic Digester can biologically dredge the accumulated organic matter from sediments. Bio-dredging can reduce the nutrients available to be washed downstream and compact the remaining inorganic sediments for more efficient dredging when it becomes necessary.

Bio-dredging can reduce BOD, compact inorganic sediment and improve water quality for ponds and lakes used for recreation. Larger scaled up bio-dredging systems can be used to address nutrient and sediment build up in rivers and behind dams to improve downstream water quality and help prepare for eventual dredging operations. The Susquehanna River's Conowingo Dam has over 85 years of nutrient and sediment build up and is a prime candidate for biological dredging.

Shoreline Protection & Erosion Control


Protecting shorelines and higher energy flows in the watershed from erosion reduces some of the water quality issues at the source. Floating Wetland Solutions can customize Floating Islands as living shorelines and as swales for "in ditch" treatment to reduce erosion while still helping treat the water that flows into contact with our substrates.
